Emma’s story
In 2019, Emma was a healthy and energetic 38-year-old with a passion for dance when diagnosed with an aggressive Hodgkin lymphoma. Emma was blindsided by this news and was unsure what her future would hold. Luckily, Emma was able to be a part of the ALLG HD10 trial.
Emma shares, “I underwent fertility preservation to freeze my eggs before starting treatment in June 2019 as this was very important to me. I was so lucky that my team was able to take this into consideration. Being on this trial gave me an opportunity to receive treatment that offered the same success rate as standard treatment without facing the possibility of not having children, which was so important to me.
Emma adds, “I had a dedicated care team, was reviewed frequently and in depth; and I had a point of contact available for any questions or concerns.
“It made a very difficult process somewhat easier. I was so grateful that this trial afforded me the opportunity to preserve my fertility while undergoing cutting edge treatment.”
After completing treatment in August 2019, Emma slowly made her way back to her old life, including getting back to doing things she loves – like travelling and taking part in a dance competition in Bali.

Once you have written your will, it is essential to have the will signed and witnessed by a solicitor or a public trustee.
Suggested Wording for your Gift in Will
It’s important to use the correct wording and legal names when making a bequest in your Will to ensure that it can be used as you intended.
Unrestricted/General:
“I, (your name) give (my whole estate) or (specific percentage of my estate) or (specific assets) or (the residue of my estate) or (the sum of AUD__________) to the ALLG for its general purposes. I declare that the receipt of an authorised officer of the ALLG will be sufficient discharge to my executors who will not be bound to see the application of the gift.”
Specific/Designated:
“I, (your name) give (my estate) or (specific percentage of my estate) or (specific asset) or (the residue of my estate) or (the sum of AUD__________) to the ALLG for (state purposes as precisely as possible). I declare that the receipt of an authorised officer of the ALLG will be sufficient discharge to my executors who will not be bound to see the application of the gift.”

A gift in will or a ‘bequest’ is a gift of personal property, such as money, belongings, or other assets, left to someone in a will. It’s essentially a way to distribute assets after someone’s death, as outlined in their will. Gifts in will can be made to individuals or organisations.
There are also different types of gifts-in-will you can make:
- A specific bequest is a nominated amount or specific gift.
- A percentage bequest is a nominated percentage of your estate.
- A residual bequest is what remains of your estate after family/friends have been provided for and all debts/taxes/expenses have been paid. This type of bequest maintains its relative value and automatically adjusts as the value of your estate increases.
No matter which form of bequest you choose, your gift is extremely valuable – helping to fund the research that could end the suffering caused by blood cancer.
You can make minor changes or additions to your current Will. This is known as a Codicil. Your solicitor will help you implement this change. For the Codicil to be effective, it must be signed and witnessed. This is the simplest way of including a charity in your current Will.
